Zamora is a province that is characterised by the contrasts of the land of which it is comprised. It is situated in the extreme NW of the central meseta and comprises some 10,559 square kilometres of ground that ranges from extensive plains of Tierra de Campos dedicated to cereal production to the mountainous highlands that occupy the western part of the province and which culminate in the peaks of over 2,000 metres in altitude of the Sierra de Sanaria.
The province is watered by two large rivers: the Duero, the east-west river which divides the province in two, and the Esla, which runs from north to south. However, the province also has an important network of smaller rivers and has many reservoirs.
The administative regions that comprise the province include the Aliste and Sanabria-La Carballeda in the western part of the province, on the frontier with Portugal, Benavente and los Valles to the east, the Tierra de Campos and del Pan and the Duero Bajo, which incorporate the municipalities of Toro, Tierra del Vino and Guareña.
