The old town of Zamora is built on a large rock outcrop that dominates the valley of the Duero and makes for an ideal defensive and strategic position. It was probably this reason that resulted the location in being developed as a permanent settlement.
It seems that the first settlements in this area were described from roman times under the name Ocellum Duri. It is thought that it was one of the «mansio» that were built alongside the roman road of communication, the Vía de la Plata, which crossed theDuero in the retion of Zamora. What is certain is that in the XII century, a bridge, of which some traces remain, was constructed here that crossed the river as a permanent crossing place.
Of the great Zamoran hero, Viriato there is little to see, except for a plaque with an inscription that was discovered in 1504 and is now incrusted on the facade of the old consistorial house.
The lack of monumental buildings in this area that date from roman times lead legend to tell (and with some foundation in historical writings) that the Viriato, who fought against and beat the romans on numerous occasions, was a real force to be reckoned with. For this reason his victories have always been reflected on the city's banners.
