 The town of Zahara de los Atunes belongs to the municipality of Barbate but is located so far towards the limit that the offices of the local Guardia Civil are in the municipal terminus of Tarifa. In Tarifa too are some of Zahara's hotels, apartments and tourist establishments.
In spite of this, and because it forms a social and gegraphical as well as economic unit, the whole urbanisation is known as Zahara.
The first documentary evidence ofthe name Zahara de los Atunes as a town located between Vejer and Tarifa is from 1444.
