Villanueva de la Concepción, a town in the province of Málaga, is located at the feet of El Torcal (within less than five minutes distance) in the municipality of Antequera (Málaga).
Located at around 500 metres above sea level, the town enjoys a benign year-round climate.
The name of the town has changed many times throughout its history. In the past it rejoiced in the names of Sopalmito and La Cuesta del Palmar.
Its' name is derived from the fact that it is here that the image of La Inmaculada resides.
Walking through Villanueva de la Concepción is an experience that leaves any visitor enthralled as there are many attractive parts of the town and many hidden niches that give the town its charm and character: wide streets, populated with pristine white houses that reflect the strength of the sun, avenues that have been lovingly and tastefully restored to their original splendour, green-lined passageways that introduce a sense of integration with the environment and the ever present feeling that history has been made here.
This gives a fleeting memory of peoples and races that have gone before and whose traces have been left on the land.
Villanueva de la Concepción, is also known as Villa del Torcal, as it is the only place in Spain where the inland geomorphology that give rise to the platueax of El Torcal and the unparalleled coastline of the Costa del Sol meet each other. But, although this is perhaps the most attractive natural feature of the town, it is by no means the only one.
Rural tourism is awakening keen interest with both locals and from tourists and the rise of this type of tourism is converting Villanueva de la Concepción into one of the principal destinations for those seeking the peace and quiet of this sleepy hamlet. Every day there are more rural cottages being built and there are ample areas (in el Nacimiento de la Concepción which is located between Villanueva de la Concepción y Antequera in the geographic centre of Málaga) given over to those seeking to be even closer to nature with only a wall of canvas between them and the sounds of the night.
For this reason the town is fast becoming one of the most prosperous and sought after destinations related to rural tourism. It's geographic location, only some 30 minutes drive from Málaga and 20 from Antequera makes it convenient to get to without having to settle down for a long drive after having arrived at a steamy and sweaty airport. Within a short space of time visitors are able to enjoy a relaxing and cool beer on one of the many terraces that are found throughout the town.
Even though the tourist industry is becoming one of the most important ways of living for the region, popular culture and tradition is not forgotten, in fact, the recent increase of interest has probably acted as a motor for reviving many customs and traditions that may have otherwise lapsed into the memory banks. One of the most important festivals of the town, the Festival de Verdiales, which has been declared of National Touristic Interest, is also one of the most important festivals of Málaga.
And not to be forgotten are the dances of la Churripampa or Churripampas.
Everyone is welcome in Villanueva de la Concepción. Our town is located in the heart of Andalucía: only 36 kilometres from Málaga (Costa del Sol) and 18 km from Antequera. Why not come and see for yourself?
