Vera is a town that has evolved as the character of the population changedover the centuries.
Like all communities looking for stability and security, early settlers of Vera looked for conditions that met with their criteria of survival. This could have been near a river, on a hill or at the interchange of crossroads across the country. The position of Vera fulfills all three criteria.
In this part of the world, the land was inhabited very early on in the development of human society. In the Bronze Age, over 4,000 years ago, the whole river basin was populated. This is indicated by many remains such as those of the Fuente Alamo (the Almanzora caves), and in Argar (Antas).
Even in those faroff days, the exploitation of the earth was commenced. In this case it was silver bearing rocks that were mined in the Sierra Almagrera. The Carthaginians continued to exploit the mines in the VI century B.C. near to Villaricos.
With the defeat of Carthage, Rome imposed its will on the population and the land. They continued with, and improved upon, techniques for extracting minerals and established a town at the mouth of the river....
