On a high promontory, with the Rio Barbete ceaselessly passing by its feet, Vejer forms a pocket of resistance to change in a changing world. Houses washed white to reflect the crushing heat of the mid summer sun are huddled together as if for comfort against a common threat.
A luxury of green trees and luscious plants mantles the steep approach to the town and, once the heights to the town have been conquered, a view that arguably puts all others to shame - the province of Cádiz in all its glory.
Vejer's name is linked to the fact that it was once located on the frontier between the Christian and Muslim held lands during the long process of the 'reconquest' of Spain. Because of its unique hilltop position, it has been a strategically defended location since humans first began to settle the Iberian Peninsula.
Every cultural colour is represented here from early prehistoric settlements, the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and of course the Moors. The latter conquered Vejer after the battle of La Janda and the town remained in Arabic hands for more than five hundred years.
Take time to explore the many narrow streets that wind, seemingly endlessly around the old town and relax into the heady atmosphere of one of the most attractive towns in southern Spain.
