Úbeda entered its phase of splendour with the arrival of the arabs. However, before this, in the late roman and visigothic period, there already exisited a small settlement that wasdependent onthe colony of Salaria, the former Úbeda. The modern town was founded by Abderramán II (822-852), who called it Medinat-Ubbadat Al-Arab (Úbeda the Arabs.)
The town was originally included within the area of influence of the district of Kura of Jaén.
It's administrative area enclosed some 35,000 hectares and was mostly dedicated to agriculture in which the growth of cereals predominated.
The city was conquered difinitively from the arabsin 1233 by the king Fernando III, the Saint and its capture provided an unstoppable impetus to the speed of the 'reconquest' of Spain.
The captureof the town gave way to the co-existence of different cultures with arabs, jews and christians living and working side-by-side but from the beginning christian domination, Úbeda experienced a great increase in its jurisdiction.
As Úbeda was situated in a strategically important position it's clear that the growth of the wealth and splendour that is today everywhere evident, was due to many factors including its communications network, the depth and breadth of the administrative jurisdiction, its logistical location and the fact that the aristocrats who chose to live here gained more and more power.
However, this soon rebounded as, in the XIV and XV centuries there was an extremely unstable situation that was caused principally by continous feuds between the nobles who were trying to dominate the Council.
