Sitting on top of the hill in the best of defensive positions and dominating the entire coastline from the highlands of Garraf to Barcelona, is the territory of Castelldefels. The southern part of the town is dominated by a romanic monastery with an integrated structure of dependencies including anexes, the rectory, the cemetary and the access patio.

There are many places along which to walk either through the town or around it. All are rich in vegetation with exotic plant species and lead to the park which constitutes the approaches to the castle. From up here you can get a great view of the highlands of Garraf, the sierras of Collserola and Marina, the city of Barcelona, the mountain of Montjuïc, the Delta del Llobregat and the coastline.

A brief history
15.000 - 3.000 B.C.: Prehistoric remains found in the Cueva Fumada. This is a natural cave and has provided ample evidence of life over 5,000 years ago.

- II - I B.C.: Remains of the town walls and Iberian ceramic remains are found thoughout the municipality (proncipally in Can Llopart, Muntanyeta, Cal Tiesso, etc.). The discovery of these materials leads experts to believe that a permanent human habitation was founded here in the IV century B.C.

- II-I B.C. - II A.D.: The Castle hill and the town center (where the Plaza Mayor is located today). A great amount of remains dating back to the iberian and roman periods have been uncovered. There is a huge expectation that more will be discovered within the town and castle boundary.

- II A.D. - V A.D.: Coastal strip : Between the ancient coastal line and the present day line many remains of sunken roman ships have been found. These have yielded some excellent examples of amphoras of wine. The last discovery here in 1990 was of a almost complete ship of 2 x 5 metres of medieval origin.

- X A.D.: First documental reference to CASTRUM DE FELS, which refers to the Capilla de Sta. María de la Salut (in the castle), which was administered by the monastery of San Cugat. This church was probably sited on top of the remains of a roman construction.

- XI - XII: Construction of the watch and defense towers of the Torre Barona which boasts a circular base.

- XIII - XIV: Difficult times for Castelldefels. Pere March purchases the Castle d'Aramprunyà and its territory from King Jaime II .

- XV: The municipality of Castelldefels is born. Since that time until today, the town has always had a mayor.
