Toro is a municipality located in the Province of Zamora in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León. In 28 B.C. the romans established a fort here as a staging post and stategic emplacement for its wars against the Cantabrians and the Asturians.
Toro was known by the phoenecians as Albocela and Arbucala.
Fiestas
Carnavales: This fiesta has been declared of Interest for Regional Tourism and is held in February or March. The Carnaval of Toro is one of the most famous within Castilla y León, being one of the very few that was not banned by the Franco Regime.
Semana Santa. Declared to be of Interest for Regional Tourism in 2007.
Romería del Cristo de las Batallas (May).
Feria del Ajo de Toro (June).
Ferias y Fiestas de San Agustín (28 August).
Virgen del Canto: (8 September).
Fiesta de la Vendimia (12 October). Declared to be of Interest for Regional Tourism.During the vine collection, a convoy of antique horses and carts passes through the countryside. The festival is unique in Spain.
