The strategic postion of Tarifa, situated as it is on the borders of the southern part of Spain in view of the African Coast, formed its historical character from very early on.
The many levels of archaeological remains that have been found in the municipal terminus of the city speak of many waves of invasion and the influence of many cultures.
Perhaps the most spectacular are those found in the river area, location of the ancient Laguna de la Janda, and the necropolis of los Algarbes, which is funereal monument that dates to the Bronze Age and, in term of its value as an indicator of human origins in the region, is one of the most important of the whole of the province.
One of the most influencial presences in the region was that of the romans who built such important constructions as Julia Traducta, located within Tarifa itself, and Mellaria, whose exact location is still being sought. Also worth mentioning is Baelo Claudia, where the most important roman remains have been uncovered.
With the occupation of the muslims in the VIII century A.D. a new era commenced for the town. It was from this period to that name of the town originates. Orignally called Tarif ibn Malluk, after the first berber chief who established a presence here.
Five centuries of muslim domination of the city is very clear on the present day structure and distribution of the streets of the town. For example, the castle is of arabic origine as is the centre of the urban district with is typically exotic street layout.
