The town of Santiponce was originally built on the banks of the river Guadalquivir, in a place known as the "Isla de Hierro" or Iron Island. Today, the olympic stadium occupies the zone.
Because of its proximity to the river, the town suffered many floods and, during the course of one of them, which happened on the 20 of December 1603, the town was buried for ever.
The survivors of the floods took refuge in the nearby monastery of San Isidoro del Campo, and the monks provided them with land on higher ground on which to build a new town. Here a new town, also called was built, almost in its entirety on the ruins of the ancient roman town of Itálica.
Once the town had been established in its actual location, in 1691 the monks applied to the Crown (Carlo II) for the concesion of a royal privilege to undertake a feria every year, this to help reactivate the town's economy. The Feria of Santiponce has been held since then every year in the first days of October.
