Ronda is one of the oldest cities in Spain. Remains that have been found in the town centre indicate that the origins of the town are rooted in the Neolithic. However, humans were present in this region much earlier.
Proof of this is from remains discovered in local caves. One of the most important is the Cueva de la Pileta. This cave has some excellent examples of cave paints that have been dated to the Palaeolithic.
A proliferation of human remains indicate an increase in activity during the recent prehistory. These times are especially important in the development of the area and their influence was obviously extensive. The important and enigmatic dolmens del Chopo and that of Encinas Borrachas, among others, speak of early man's attempts at reconciling his place as part of the environment.
