dscn4352241005.jpgWherever you are, close your eyes for a moment. Imagine clutching the seat of the plane or the AVE trying to leave behind accumulated months of stress and in search of adventure that will let you forget, even for a short while, the office, the traffic, the neighbours, the in-laws, bank queues or the incessant hammering of never–ending roadworks.

You don’t even need an adventure, right? All you need is a few days peace, rest and relaxation in the company of those who can help you disconnect and pamper you body and soul, at least until you rejoin the rat-race.

Now imagine that you’re on the ground again. You’ve unpacked your luggage in your hotel room and, after having enjoyed an invigorating shower with no worry to concern you other than where to find the optimum level of temperature and pressure, you put on comfortable shoes and clothes; they only need to be ones that provide you with minimum aesthetic dignity. You’re ready to stroll, with no stress, rush or timetable, around a coastal resort that’s been recommended to you by Oleonline.

Puerto Marina is a sporting port situated within the limits of the city of Benalmádena, some 30 kilometres west of Malaga. In ancient times it was inhabited by all the usual crowd: the Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs, the latter of whom gave it the name of ‘Ibn al-ma´din’ or ‘Ben-al Madina’ (‘Son of the Mines’).

It is a place the has been elected as being the ‘Best Marina in the World’ and it boasts an abundant population of yachts, launches, sailing ships, bars, pubs and restaurants, charming squares, terraces and galleries.

It is a place where the stars are the beautiful people, both men and women, and where luxury is within reach of everyone; where there is unending nightlife of all sorts and for all tastes; quiet terraces, bars with excellent music, a great atmosphere and discothèques that don’t stop rocking until dawn.

Let’s go back for a minute to the waking dream. Imagine that you take my advice and you follow the plan I propose:

Firstly, take a walk around the marina to feel the sea breeze, opening and closing your eyes to enjoy both the scent of the sea and the delicious aromas that waft from near-by restaurants. The calm evening scenery is bathed in the soft light of sunset and there are no strident noises other than the excited enthusiasm of a child chasing his little sister.

After the exploratory walk, you can take a look at the submarine park of Sea Life and, later, take advantage of the huge variety of gastronomy on offer.

This latter is so extensive that it’s probably advisable to have at least an idea of the type of food you’d like to eat or it’ll get late while you try to select an appropriate place to satisfy your taste buds. There’s Argentine grilled meat, various tapas, Italian, shellfish….a whole lot of excellent fare to choose between.

dscn4368242005.jpg Now, if we’re going to get specific, I recommend that you eat in Pacino’s, an Italian restaurant with tables on a balcony that overlooks the port. Not only does it have great pasta but also great views. Ask anyone where it is as everyone knows it.

To digest your food, I recommend a coffee with Baileys in any of the terraces that your find just before you get to Marakas, a bar where the music and atmosphere are both conducive to burning calories, either with the body or..ehem..with the eyes.

And don’t miss, a little further on, La Cubana. This bar has both drinks and music with a Caribbean flavour and, from time to time, offers live music. Don’t lose any time and throw yourself into a wild salsa lubricated by a ‘mojito’.

From two thirty or three in the morning onwards, I suggest you dance the rest of the morning away until dawn in the discotheque KIU and, for those who like to eat something before going to sleep off the hangover, just in front of the Plaza Solymar there’s a diner with finger-licking good club sandwiches.

Benalmádena, and specifically Puerto Marina, is situated between Málaga and Marbella. There are more foreign tourists than in Málaga but less than in Marbella. There is less glamour than in the latter but more than in the capital city. It’s cheaper than Puerto Banús but with the same degree or more of nightlife. Oh, and remember not to arrive late because getting parked is almost mission impossible from 10.00 at night onwards.

And finally, imagine…..that you ‘pull’. Ok, if this is a bit too much imagination, go to the next day when the possibilities are multiplied by five, where the night is a goldmine of opportunities. They named this place as they do for some reason……
