Rolling hills punctuated with olive groves, typical of this part of southern Huelva, surround the town of La Palma del Condado, a town famous for its wines, its Romeria and its noble monuments.
Located in the heart of agricultural Andalusia, Palma del Condado is a town that the motorway bypasses leaving it sleepy and tranquil in the midday heat of summer. It’s probably just as well because, without a doubt, if everyone came here, they wouldn't leave.
There are many ancient buildings nestling in the heart of the town. For example, the parrochial church of San Juan Bautista that was commenced in the 1756 and replaced a church that had been completely destroyed by the earthquake that was responsible for the destruction of Lisbon in 1755, is one of the most imposing of the many buildings that crowd into this small town.
White houses huddle together as if seeking comfort against the onslaught of high summer when temperatures can rise as high as 45ºC. The narrow streets provide welcome shade during the hottest part of the day although, in general, the only living beings to be seen alive at this unearthly time are mad dogs and the occasional Englishman.
Don’t be fooled, though, by the sleepy aspect. In common with all Spanish towns, the white, innocent-looking facades hide some excellent restaurants where the food is exquisite and the beer ice cold. The lamb is expecially recommended by our culinery experts.
In the centre of the town is an attractive memorial to Nuestra Señora del Valle that, on occasions of festivals and the annual pilgrimage, is taken out from the church and paraded with considerable enthusiasm through the flower bedecked streets to a remote location where the townsfolk, and anyone who wants to participate, celebrate her existence with copious quantities of beer, fino and dancing.
To the north, the sierras of Huelva rise from the plain like a school of whales playing in a calm sea. However, around Palma del Condado the surrounding countryside provides little relief to the monotony of the plain of Huelva, important for the many crops that form the economic backbone of this part of the world.
