The municipality of Oviedo extends over some 185 km² and is situated in the central part of Asturias, almost directly between the rivers Nalón and Nora. The maximum height above sea-level corresponds to Monte Picayu, of 709 metres.
The old town of Oviedo is located at around 227 metres abofe sea level and is often buffeted by notherly winds that come in from the direction of Monte Naranco. To the south is the Sierra del Aramo. The modern town has a population of around 209,000 inhabitants.
