Mérida is the capital and institutional nucleus of the Autonomous region of Extremadura. It is here that all the headquarters of the public institutions are located. It is also a tourist reference without equal, this because of its magnificent roman heritage in the form of buildings and amphitheatres on a scale that has to be seen to be believed. For this reason the city has been declared as Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO since 1993.

The city has an inumerable amount of buildings and structures of great importance that keeps alive a history of events that occurred in the city, and by reference, in the rest of the Iberina Peninsula, many hundreds of centuries before. However, this almost living historical panorama exists in contrast with a city that is thriving and modern and that has been converted into a reference point for other cities with an important patrimony. It is a foremost centre for international congresses and services related to the exhibitions.

Even so, with an international and outgoing aspect, Mérida manages to conserve its tranquil and almost provincial nature and offers an envidiable enviroment where its citizens can develop their professional activities whilst conserving an extremely high standard of living. This has been the driver for the city's expansion both in urban and economic terms.

In its role as capital of the autonomous region, Mérida offers a wide range of hospitality services from high quality hotels to establishments where tourist can find comfort whilst exploring the citys' heritage.
