The strategic position of Menorca, situated as it is in almost the centre of the western Mediterranean, was either a blessing or a curse in that it has been the focus of settlers since humans were able to put to water without sinking.
Its history therefore is long and there are ample remains from just about every phase and epoque of man's development as a thinking, intelligent animal.
In the XVIII century, the islands history was marked by conquest and reconquest as the great maritime powers of the day sought dominance. British, French and Spanish have all laid claim and devasted the island to varying degrees. It wasn't until 1802, via the Treaty of Amiens, that the island became definitively Spanish.
All of these external forces that the island has been subject to across the length and breadth of history have shaped it indelibly with many characteristics that shape its present day aspect so that its customs, traditions and culture are all marked by the signs of many influences. Besides this, the island has been left an important legacy in terms of monuments, prehistoric villages and roman and muslim remains. There is also a rich tradition of architecture from palaeochristian churches to british palatial houses adorned with modernist details.
