Málaga is much more than sun, sea and sand. From the Sierra Morena to the coast, the Province of Málaga is perhaps the most fertile river plain in the Iberian Peninsula supporting just about every type of fruit and vegetable imaginable.
The countryside is a green natural reserve that is not only used as an agricultural back-drop; there are also extensive areas that are conserved in their original condition and the huge, wide open views allow ones spirit to soar unshackled by modern living.
It’s said that the advantageous situation of Malaga in terms of climate, natural resources and the fertility of its soil have perhaps acted, paradoxically, against it as it has been the centre of many civilisations who have battled over it to take advantage of the bounties of the soil.
This has made the area perhaps one of the most contested in the history of Spain.
Situated on the southern margin of Europa, to the far north by France, south by Africa and East and West, Portugal and Italy respectively, Málaga enjoys an extraordinary climate with temperatures that average around 22ºC all year round and more than 300 days of sunshine.
The province consists of 101 municipalities, starting with Manilva and ending with Nerja.
The province also offers a huge range of services and activities that will catch the attention of even the most demanding visitor that chooses to visit.
The diversity of the province is emphasised by its long history; many prehistoric remains have been located that evoke images of the first inhabitants that populated this land; the Ibers.
The Romans were located here for several centuries and proof of their passing can still be enjoyed in many locations almost 2000 years later.
With the fall of the roman empire, the Visigoths occupied the empty niches although their reign ended violently when thy made the error of inviting the Arabs into the country to resolve local conflicts.
The recently arrived mercenaries enjoyed the land so much that they stayed for over 700 years.
There are abundant reminders of these warriors as well as evidence that, at this time they were perhaps one of the most culturally enlightened people of the ancient world.
With more than 50 golf course, the majority of them close to residential areas, the Province of Málaga presents one of the largest concentrations of golf course with fabulous facilities in Europe.
Thanks to over 300 days of sunshine, the resident golfer can enjoy many days of carefree practice.
The Costa de Sol offers many more activities enabling residents and visitors alike to enjoy life to the full. There is something for everyone and all tastes are catered for. Apart from this in any of the many four or five star hotels guests will enjoy gyms and swimming pools, all adequately provided with safety measures.
There’s also horse riding, risk adventure sport, walking and biking in abundance. It’s no wonder that many international teams of different sports choose Málaga as a training ground.
Today an asphalt belt surrounds the coastline of Málaga like a chastity belt around a young girl. Excessive property prices due to an influx of northern European purchasers fleeing from cooler climes have ensured that it’s difficult to buy anything in Málaga capital city.
Urbanisations along the coastal areas have sectioned the coastline into neat packages, complete with swimming pools, golf courses and health spas.
However, if you want to escape from the world of towels and consumerism, permit yourself the luxury of exploring the province of Málaga.
Then you’ll discover a whole new world of beauty, culture and gastronomy that reinforces the feeling that Málaga, in terms of all these life enrichment factors, is one of the richest provinces of Spain; a place with an infinity of possibilities.
