It was until only recently that the settlement of the town of Los Barrios was dated at after the loss of Gibrlatar in 1704. However, today it's known that in fact there was already an urban settlement in the place in which the modern day town is located.

It's known that the population of this place was actually muslim and that in 1497 the town was passed over by the Duke of Medina Sidonia to one of his colleagues, one Martín de Bocanegra who was a lawyer of Gibraltar and alcalde of Medina.

One of the most sigificant historical features of Los Barrios was the construction of the ancient hermitage of San Isidro. This place of worship was constructed by the Escoto family of Gibraltar around 1698. Following this, and with the arrival of exiles from Gibraltar at the end of 1704, a new church was built in 1727. This church, however, suffered several demolitions and delays and wasn't completed until the end of the XVIII century.

The first Town Hall was declared independent from San Roque, by authorisation of Fernando VI, in 1756 and the town experienced a major growth during the reign of Carlos III because of the great seige of Gibraltar which occurred between 1779 and 1782. The town was commended for the strength of its resistance to the Napoleonic troops.

Perhaps one of the most famous events that took place in the town was the colaboration between the famous bandolero José Mª el Tempranillo and people from Los Barrios to support the rebellion against Fernando VII that was being plotted from Gibraltar....
