Lleida Capital City
Lérida (oficially and in catalán, Lleida; in occitano, Lhèida) is a province of Spain situated in the western part of the Autonomous Region of Catalonia. It is limited with the provinces of Girona, Barcelona, Tarragona, Zaragoza and Huesca and with France to the north (with the departaments of Ariège and Alto Garona ) and Andorra.
It is in this province that the Valley of Arán is located. This valley is peculiar in Spain that here the population speaks its own language, Aranés.
The national park of Aiguas Tortas and Lago de San Mauricio, la Seu Vella, the Real Monasterio de Santa María de Vallbona, the Museo de Juguetes and Autómatas de Verdú and the Monasterio de Bellpuig de les Avellanes are only some of the spectacular monuments found in this province and offer only a taste of the richness of the culture that is found here.
Many have been the civilizations that have arrived and settled in Lleida and they have provided a rich cultural legacy that is reflected in the modern cities as well as in the character of the people who live here. The Ilergetas, originally an Iberian tribe, were the people whoe established themselves here in around the VI century B.C. Being insecure times, these people sought out high places in which to build their settlements. It's easy to imagine an Iltrida settlement perched on top of the Roca Soberana.
Around the year 716-719, Lleida was occupied by the saracens. Four centuries of living close to this arabic culture have left an indelible make on the city and province of Lleida.
