The first indications of the history of La Alberca come from prehistoric remains found close by the town in the form of wonderful cave paintings that date from the Neolithic period. These paintings are found in many small caves that are dotted around the valleys that surround La Alberca and its neighbouring towns, Lera and Las Batuecas.
The Middle Ages saw a repopulation of the region on the orders of the christian king Alfonso IX. Of these new settlers that arrived here, many were of French origin who came under the auspices of D. Raimundo de Borgoña, a French noble married to doña Urraca, one of the daughters of Alfonso VI. This gave rise to the occurrence of many French names and influences such as the famuos Sierra de Francia, the highest mountain on whose flanks is located the village of La Alberca.
The end of the Middle Ages was an important moment due to the discovery in 1434 in mysterious conditions of an image of the Virgen Mary that is known as the Virgen de la Peña de Francia. This image was housed in a sanctuary on the top of the mountain which is now a famous place of pilgrimage for the Faithful. As it is located on the Camino de Santiago is is known as the Southern Road via the Via de Plata.
