Estepa lies closely hugging a promontory that rises out of the Guadalquivir flood plain, the Cerro de San Cristobal, and extends around the base of this almost as if the original town planners were consciously drawing a picture of a dove in flight.
White houses, narrow streets protecting against the heat of the sun, temples and ducal palaces are all represented in this town. There is also a popular town centre and 'barrios' or districts, with their own character and personality, although they all share a common origin. The streets are lined with inscriptions carved on stones that accumulate the passing of the years and hidden corners that almost seem to preserve and immortalise the memory of the town.
Estepa, with its defiant castle which provided a unique strategic advantage in times of war, is now at peace and one can contemplate the fabulous view that can be achieved from here across a typically andalusian canva. The whole impression invites any visitor not to pass by this beautiful part of the world but to lose themselves in the streets of an endless fairy tale.
