Bilbao is located on the northern atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula - latitude: 43º 15' 42" N, longitude: 2º 55' 43" W-, and at 19 meters above sea level. The city extends for an area of 41.6 square kilometres and its important communications infrasturcture is connected with every major city and the rest of Europe via land, sea and air.
Bilbao is the heart of a metropolis with more than a million inhabitants. From its foundation over more than 700 years ago, Bilbao has been the centre of economic and social development for the whole region of this corner of Bizkaia.
Some may argue that from Bordeux to La Coruña, the hegemony of Bilbao in terms of economy and culture is indiscultable. No other economic centre has as many reasons to claim to be the economic, financial, culture and touristic centre of the entre northern coast of the Iberian Peninsula.
The origins of Bilbao are lost in the mists of time. It is known, however, that a human activity was registered here on both sides of the river Nervión ovre 1000 years ago. The level of activity had reached quite considerable proportions before the city was even considered as such.
It was one Fue Don Diego López of Haro V, Lord of Bizkaia, who, in 1300, conceded the title of city to the growing commercial centre. It had reached, even then, a high level of importance in terms of economic activity and as a principal fishing port for the whole area.
The unique position of the town ensured that its growth was assured. Maritime activities increased in size and proportion very rapidly, while the old population extended to both sides of the river. This economic growth went hand in hand with the cultural development of the area, a process that was immensely facilitated by the continual arrival of pilgrims along the Way to Santiago de Compostela.
