The origin of Badolatosa lies in its roman heritage when it was a small village called “Vadus Latus” (Wide River), simply for the fact that it was founded on the banks of the River Genil or Singilis.
Archaeological remains indicate that in roman times, Badolatosa was a rich village and had a privelidged position which enabled it to cover the alimentariy requirements of larger settlements such as Ostipo (Estepa).
This function of providing much of the requirement for neighbouring towns continued into Arabic times, and the town was especially known for the rich production from the local areas of produce or 'huertas'.
However, the town really began to grow in the XVI century thanks principally to agriculture. This process of growth continued into the middle of the XIX century and it reached a population of around 2,107 inhabitants. Nowadays the town has a popularion of around 2,800 inhabitants.
Badolatosa is connected to the bandit known as El Tempranillo because of its srtategic position and the position next to the river Genil. In any history of the town it's important to understand how useful the river was during the epoque of the bandits or bandalleros as a strategic zone for settlement and hiding. The town is surrounded by mountains and this made it ideal for hiding out and taking time to regroup before new attacks were mounted.
