ESPlog! . . . . . . . . . . . . .
An iful of Spain Imprimir E-Mail
Welcome to my Esplog. What is one of those, I hear you cry?

Well, it's a commentary about and from Spain. As a foreigner is Spain I am continually surprised by the variety and richness of the place. The difference between the communities and autonomous regions make it, in my humble opinion, culturally one of the richest places on the planet. Even if you don't agree, there is no doubt that, in Spain, there exists a wealth of feelings, sensations, emotions and potential experiences wrapped up in a fabric that binds the whole together like a sack of hungry cats.

Obviously, I can't pretend to understand the country as can someone who has attained an intimacy that comes after having passed all their formative years as part of the furniture. I don't even consider myself qualified to pretend to pass an informed opinion about contemporary events. All I can hope to do here is to transmit my shear captivation for the place and to comment on what I consider is of importance. That 's the nature of an Esplog.

Spain is a relatively new democracy and, even though over thirty years have passed since the demise of the dictator, the country is still having what could easily be described as growing pains. Franco died in 1975. Shortly thereafter the country opted for decentralisation and the autonomous communities were established. These were based broadly along the lines of provincial boundaries, although, as anyone who knows will tell you, there is much more than that and character and historical evolution also come into play.

There are 17 autonomous regions and each one has its own own distinctive characteristics and peculiarities. All of them are fascinating and all of them are filled with cultural and historic wonders that could be described as being interwoven into the foundations of the civilization we live in today.
