HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Alicante is a city with over three thousand years of history, a fact that is revealed by the many archeological remains that date from the III century B.C.

The first inhabited nucleii were situated on the side of Mount Benacantil where it's thought that the first inhabitants formed part of the Iberian culture and peoples.

The first identifiable necleus dates from the IV century and is located near Tossal de Manises; this wsas the roman-iberian colony of Lucentum.

ARABIC CONQUEST

After the fall of the Roman Empire the next major wave of civilizing influence was that of the Arabs. For defensive reasons the inhabited nucleus was transferred to the side of Mount Benacantil thus creating Vila Vella.

RECONQUEST

In 1247, after the conquest of the city by Castille under the leadership of Prince Alfonso, later to be Alfonso X the Wise, the city converted into what was known as Vila Nova.

In 1249 Jaime II incorporated the town of Alicante into the kingdom of Valencia and, two centuries later, in 1490, Fernando the Catholic imparted the status of 'city'.
