Alájar is one of the most visited of all the towns of the Sierra de Huelva. And it's not difficult to see why.

Its enormous natural beauty; a white village nestled beside a brook and a shady forest, attract a population of animals and birds that are rarely seen in other parts of the Peninsula.
South of the village is the Peña de Arias Montano, a hill of quartzite located in arguably one of the most beautiful natural areas of the Sierras.

The well-used pathway snakes around giant fish-like structures of quartzite that has been squeezed like toothpaste during the process of tectonic upheaval here some 500 million years ago. Because they are much harder that the surrounding rocks, these quartzite lenses appear to swim along the side of the hillside.

The local fiesta is in honour of The Reina de los Ángeles.

When there don't miss out on the Peña de Arias Montano. From here there is a view that extends across the Sierra de Aracena and, on a good day (hey, let's face it, most days are good!) you can almost see to the sea.

alajarpeasm.jpgPlaces to visit in Alajar include the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles and the Iglesia de San Marcos, both of which are beautifully preserved examples of the architecture of the region: a mix between the modern and the ancient, as if remembering days long gone.

When you're there, don't forget to visit also, the restaurant on the Peña. It's said that the venerable Arias Montano, confesor of Filipe II came here in the turbulent days of the king's reign looking for peace and quiet.

Well, if the restaurant had been there when this gentleman visited he'd have had a great lunch!
