aguadulce12.jpgThe spectres of pirates and smugglers who may haunt these places, if they weren’t trapped in the temporal plane of their deaths, would choke on their rum. However, the shifting sands have removed every last shred of evidence that such forbidding times ever existed. The empty coves and silent sierras have been replaced with hotels, squash courts and beach cafes ejaculating the latest pop music at full blast – designed to reach the inner ears of even the most obstinate of hard hearing.

This is Aguadulce, one of the many villages within Spain that boast the name. The origin of the name has escaped the author although if ‘sweet water’ is to be found in these times of hypercontamination and global destruction it would be nice to advertise the fact to the world. This town relies heavily on the tourist industry; the whole unit is geared towards being populated by free spending tourists for the long, hot summer months.

For those of us seeking a few days of sun and sea during the precious days of the year that constitute the annual holiday, this is a town that caters. It caters for children (lots of activities), it caters for newly weds from northern climes (lots of sand, sun, sea and – er – dulce vida), it caters for Germans (lots of towel space early in the morning), English (lots of beer) and French (good snails in a rich garlic sauce – June to August). In fact, it’s a fun place that provides not only the opportunity to doze in the sun but also to use as a base to escape into the tranquillity of the surrounding countryside.

And the options for this last activity are endless. Aguadulce is located a the feet of the Sierra of Gádor and, once the dust of the discotheque has settled behind the limo, the magic of the interior of Spain opens like spring blossom. From here, and within as little as one hour’s drive, there is access to flower-filled picturesque villages that are filled with awe-inspiring views and romantic restaurants, beautifully restored rustic cottages, delicious tapas and rich wines. There is only one danger: you may be tempted not to go home.
